Where to take your e-waste
Here are some tips on where to take old computer or other electronic parts. Call ahead, as some places require an appointment.

For free

A listing of local collection events can be found at www.earth911.org.

HoustonFreecycle, a grass-roots environmental movement, lets you post unwanted items for others to take for free at www.freecycle.org.

The city of Houston collects electronics for residents at 5900 Westpark; 5614 Neches, Building C; and 11500 S. Post Oak. Call 713-551-7355.

Best Buy has a box at stores to drop off old cell phones, inkjet cartridges and rechargeable batteries, and prepaid envelopes for those who want to send in their old inkjet and toner cartridges.

AT&T Wireless takes unwanted wireless phones, accessories and batteries, regardless of the manufacturer or carrier, at retail stores.

The Wireless Foundation, www.wirelessfoundation.org, refurbishes and provides cell phones to victims of domestic violence.

La-fundacion.net accepts donated equipment it can fix and send to technology centers in low-income areas of Texas. Call 713-460-5544.

Technology for All redistributes computers to families and the disabled and helps create computer labs in low-income communities in the Houston area. 109 N. Post Oak Lane, Suite 425. Call 713-316-5764.

You pay them
Fort Bend County Recycle Center
accepts electronics from VCRS and fax machines to stereos and microwaves from residents, but there's a $5 charge per item. 1200 Blume Road, Rosenberg. Call 281-342-5226.

HP online computer hardware recycling service costs $13 to $34 per item. www.hp.com.

1 -800-GOT-JUNK will pick up equipment on the same day you call for disposal or recycling. Minimum $80 charge. Call 1-800-468-5865 or 713-343-0315.

They pay you
Compucycle
will buy items that can be resold and will charge to dispose of computer hardware. 7700 Kempwood Drive. Call 713-869-6700.

Altech Metals buys scrap parts and obsolete computers to resell. It doesn't take TVs or monitors but will buy scrap circuit boards, hard drives, motherboards and other items. 10612B Hempstead. Call 713-680-9325.
